Corners of the Churchyard

*On the North side just below the School is a Tree Nursery with young trees, mainly Oak, grown from acorns found in Calverley Woods. They are looked after by the school children and will be planted back into the woods when they are ready (The Trees that is!).
*We have left the rest of the Northern boundary for Brambles and Nettles. This is a lovely place for butterflies in summer and Blackberries in autumn.
*The East side is a grassy footpath with wonderful unobstructed views across the Aire Valley.
*In the South East corner is a Nature Area we are developing with help from the 2nd Calverley Scouts as a haven for small creatures, insects and wild flowers by creating suitable habitats.
*Our Equipment Container and the Scout Hut are in the South West Corner. The Scouts help us to look after the Churchyard.
*Along the West Wall, by Towngate is a grassy area with Shrubs, mainly Laurel that we are hoping to diversify by using other shrubs.
*Further along the West side, by the Church entrances is a Garden and a variety of plants we are growing for their appearance and also to use for decorations inside the Church.
This is a lovely place to sit on a sunny day.
*In the main part of the Churchyard are around 2000 gravestones. The old part of the churchyard became very overgrown with Brambles and Saplings. We have recently cleared most of these and the area is looked after by Sheep and Pigmy Goats lent to us by Andrew Emsley of Greenside Farm.
*The graves themselves provide a fascinating record of the families of the area, the inscriptions reflecting both their faith and their feelings. Amongst them you can find; the Calverley Giant; An industrialist who pressed for the Ten Hours Act; A Miner killed by a roof fall at a Coal Mine in Horsforth; A well known Hymn Writer and many more.
*If you would like to help look after this wonderful place we are usually there on a Friday Morning cutting the grass, pruning the shrubs, recording the inscriptions and similar tasks. It is good exercise with something to show for it at the end. If you can`t find us in the Churchyard pop into the Church for a Coffee, we may well be there!
